Chapter 1. Setting Up a Blog From scratch

Starting a blog in 2020 is easy and inexpensive.

The most popular blogging software, WordPress.org, is free. Professionally developed WordPress themes and plugins are free. And there are literally millions of free tutorials to get you started (including this one) The only cost to start a blog is the amount of money you pay for web hosts and domain names.

Of course, this can be very difficult at a later stage. But generally speaking, blogging is accessible to anyone who has a computer with an Internet connection. In fact, you can actually create a blog and run it in the next 20 minutes. The steps outlined in the following steps are exactly how I started my blog.

Basically all you need to do.

Choose a good web host and domain name

Point your domain DNS to your web host

Install WordPress on your new web host (easy to use auto installer).

Log in to your wordpress and post your first post.

And that's it.

1. Choose a good web host and domain name

To start a self-hosted blog, you first need a domain name and a web hosting account.

Your domain name is your blog. It is not a physical thing that you can touch or see. But just a string of characters that identifies your website, such as the title of a book or place. Your domain lets your visitors know what kind of blog they are viewing.

Web hosting, on the other hand, is where you store your blog content - words, blog themes, images, videos and so on.

Domain Names - Where to register?

You can select and register your domain names through the domain registrar. GoDaddy, Name Copy, Hover, and Domain.com are some of the best registrars in the market.

Note that domain registration must be separated from your web host. Just because your web host offers a free domain does not mean that you should allow the hosting company to control your domain registration. Personally, I use Blogger  to manage my domain registrations. But any other famous domain registrar should be fine. By doing this, I am able to change my domain DNS whenever I want and avoid locking myself in with a particular web host. I strongly advise you to do the same for your own protection.

Web Hosting - Where to Host Your Blog?

For starters, I recommend starting small with a shared web host.

In shared hosting - although hosting resources are less than others (VPS, cloud, etc.), to get started you will need a low budget (often <$ 5 / mo) and technical knowledge. When choosing a web host for your blog, here are five factors to consider:

Reliability - Your blog needs to be stable and available online 24 × 7.

Speed ​​Speed ​​- You need a host that carries loads quickly because speed affects the user experience and search rankings.

Pricing - Hosting <$ 5 / mo is a good start, you do not need premium service at this stage.

Room to grow - When your blog grows you will need hosting upgrades (extra features, more server power, etc.).
